GlySens Incorporated was founded with the mission of developing a commercial, fully implanted, unobtrusive, long term continuous glucose monitoring system for the diabetes healthcare market. Under the direction of Dr. Lucisano, GlySens established operations in the Sorrento Mesa area of San Diego, a nucleus for wireless communications and biomedical product development. In its initial phase, GlySens focused on sensor design and development, creation of novel biomaterials, and the establishment of production methods necessary for the transformation of early sensor prototypes into commercially viable devices.
After securing a series of peer-reviewed research grants from the NIH, NIST, JDRF, and DoD based on this successful early work, GlySens focused on demonstrating the viability of its prototype continuous glucose sensor system. This focus led the Company's research and development efforts through stages of successful in vitro testing, demonstration of sensor materials biocompatibility, short term in vivo evaluation in a small animal implant model, and long term in vivo trials, including the successful demonstration of wireless, real-time continuous glucose monitoring for more than one year in large animal implant studies. Building on the success of these efforts, GlySens is currently preparing for initial clinical trials that are expected to commence in 2010.
